Woman Resilience Strength

Artist Statement: For Art Basel Miami
My recent underwater photography salutes a woman's strength and grace in an ever-changing world where we continue to navigate turbulent currents. Orchestrating these elegant female forms in water with a melodic balance embraces my classic photographic style.
We generally give water a feminine face, associating its changeable nature and sensual rhythms with women. Water is life. And a current that stirs within each of us. So it’s no surprise I would take my camera into this weightless world to share a siren’s point of view inspired by the women who swim deep and courageously against a dark undertow that tries to stifle our cries for equality and fundamental rights.
But united, we rise and boldly breach forbidden horizons to breathe free.
Artist Bio for Maryanne:
I am a fine art mixed media photographer born in New York and based in San Diego, California. My passion for world travel, the ocean, and photography fuels all my creative skills. I’ve been an ocean swimmer since childhood. When I dive into the sea, I’m renewed with an insular calm and humbled by its undulating power. In addition, I am inspired daily by the fierce spirit and humor of my mother, a life-long advocate of women’s rights, who loved me enough to let me find my own current.
